On the Way to the Off-the-Map CG -- August 9-19, 2008
Well, the reason it is called the 'off the map' CG, is because the trip leader and chief direction finder, screwed up in a major way.
I looked at the map, made some major (but wrong) assumptions, and as a result we ended up going 2500 ft down, and 4 miles in the
wrong direction. Didn't even know of the extent of my mistake until that night when I cranked up the old GPS, and it gave me
readings that were off my pre-printed maps. "What the he-- is wrong with this thing, I said", since it showed us as several
miles off where we should be. Eventually I discovered my mistake and in the AM we had to go back up 2500 feet and 4 miles
and then start in the direction we should have gone last night. Fortunately the hiking partner was good-natured about
the whole thing. I'm not sure why. Since this was a genuine, bonified DUH!!!!!

As I have said before, I am fascinated by not only the coloration of these hills, but the incredible alluvial fans that they generate!

Here we go loop-de-lou! (But in the wrong direction!)

Any break is a good one!

A spectacular waterfall/waterfall/waterfall on the way down. Didn't make all the wrong direction worthwhile, but was neat!

Gives new meaning to the phrase, 'just hanging on' These trees are living a precarious existence!
